YOGA STYLES

STYLES DE YOGA

Yoga has been around since ancient times,

carrying a large number of physical but also psychological benefits. It improves flexibility and range of muscle movement. In addition to muscle strengthening and better balance control, Yoga can also be very beneficial in optimizing the human body's breathing capacities for better breath control and blood vitality.

Beyond these recognized primary functions, Yoga is one of the main activities today that strengthens self-confidence, a better connection with the world around us (human, animal and plant), a reduction in stress and a sensitive openness to a certain Indian philosophy and its spirituality.

Yoga as described below will most of the time be centered around 3 major orientations, namely, Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breathing) and Dharana (meditation).

"Main objective of Yoga since the dawn of time when you are on a Yoga mat",

is to discover one's body, one's interior, one's abilities, one's mind, in order to ultimately open up to the world around us and better appreciate the uniqueness of animal-human-vegetable-natural elements.

Yoga has always been an almost constant truth, since the creation of humanity, it's a whole philosophy of life, a philosophy of Life.

HATHA YOGA
GENTLE AND TRADITIONAL YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

The Sanskrit term "Hatha" refers to the of the physical postures of Yoga and signifies vigor and effort. It combines postures (asanas) with breathing (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana).

Considered as the most traditional, it is at the origin of most all styles of Yoga, it is rather calm and proves to be the most suitable for the greatest number in the West. It is a gentle and progressive style of Yoga with a high level of subtlety.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

The asanas must be performed in a slow sequence without transition, with effort and maintenance over a given time for several breaths, but also with a lot of concentration and control of the breath (the pranayama), preferably in a calm place where the awakening spiritual may be appropriate. Practically, this style must register on a good alignment of the positions and the limbs of the body.
This style represents the harmonization of the psychological ( concentration & serenity) with the muscular (power and duration) until the desired perfection.
The more or less long time devoted to the postures invigorates the body gradually and promotes a good circulation of energies as well as a good discipline of mind.
The benefits are felt on the optimization of body & mind balance. Without a competitive spirit, you just have to give your best.

After a few sessions, you can start to feel it the benefits through better self-esteem, greater flexibility, better concentration and improved sleep. Without pressure, this style leads us favorably towards more effort for the greatest moral and physical good. With this practice, the body very quickly becomes a vehicle for the soul.

Tapis de yoga Ashtanga Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

ASHTANGA YOGA

INTENSIVE AND DYNAMIC YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

This style was born in the 1930s and developed by master Yogi Krishnamacharya who himself learned from master Sri Ramamohan Brahmachari in the Himalayas.

This discipline was then theorized in the 70s by Shrî K. Pattabhi Jois who greatly contributed to the expansion of Yoga in the world.

In Sanskrit, the origin of the word comes from "Ashtau" which means 8 and "Anga" which means limbs. 8 means 8 postures, 8 rules of Life, namely:

Asanas - Body Postures

Dharana - Concentration

Dhyana - Meditation

Pranayama - Breathing

Pratyahara - Mastery of the Senses

Niyamas - Self-Discipline and Self-Ethic

Samadhi - State of Peace, Joy and Enlightenment

Yamas - Rules of Behavior and Moral Ethics

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

This well-codified style requires sequences carried out with perfect discipline, a lot of rigor and according to a well-established order. Humility, power and perseverance are required.

Without ever going so far as pain, learning the postures must be done rigorously. This discipline allows in the long term to relieve the joints, to endure the movements, to improve its respiratory capacity by strengthening the heart muscle, to reduce stress and the elimination of toxins.

The more or less rapid sequences from one posture to another, some of which are done with maintenance and breathing "Ujjayi" which is made sound by a contraction of the back of the throat, rest of course on a good synchronization of the breath, which makes it possible to increase the body temperature and thus to soften muscles and joints so that the energy can circulate perfectly in the body.

The series also called "Mysore* style" which are done in a very precise order must be done in increasing order of difficulty. Be aware that this discipline makes you sweat in a good way. It is a rather suitable style and preferred by experienced Yogis and Yoginis.

This style can generate an unconscious cerebral trance. His practice is carried out over a session of 136 non-stop asanas over 90 minutes.

As for the classes, they take place in silence for greater focus on listening to the breath because it is what gives rhythm to all movements.

* Mysore is a place in southern India.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

Being considered a traditional but also dynamic Yoga, the natural cork mats as well as the pro excellence natural rubber mats are rather privileged.

Tapis de yoga Vinyasa Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

VINYASA YOGA

INTENSIVE AND DYNAMIC YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

In Sanskrit, this style means synchronization of the movement on the breath "Vi" means specific way and "Nyasa" placement. The breathing component is essential here.

Initiated from Ashtanga in the 80s, this dynamic style of Yoga can have followers who wish above all to be free from the sequence and the sequence of movements. It is often associated with music.

Today, some Yogis and Yoginis see it as a form of "trendy" gymnastics and choreography to music. The sequence is so beautiful and graceful that it looks like a dance.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

Unlike Ashtanga, this dynamic style of Yoga is performed freely regarding the asanas and their sequence. It only depends on your will and your abilities to fully enjoy good physical exercise.

It is nevertheless a professional yoga that solicits the body, the mind and the breath. By intimately linking a regular and almost continuous flow of postures with well-controlled breathing (a good pranayama), this style allows free and creative sequences. Classes that last approximately 60 to 90 minutes help develop strength, endurance and flexibility. Expect to sweat!

At the end of the session, it is always customary to practice the "Savasana" posture, in other words the corpse position; don't be afraid, it's about lying on your back to clear your mind and relax!

In short, this free style has all the favors to give a well "sculpted" body and will open up a greater dimension of being.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

Being considered a traditional but also dynamic Yoga, the natural cork mats as well as the pro excellence natural rubber mats are rather privileged.

Tapis de yoga Kundalini Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

KUNDALINI YOGA

SPIRITUAL AND GENTLE YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

In Sanskrit, the term means "coiled or coiled". Its practice is based on mastering our energy.

Initially perceived in the United States around 1890, it was introduced in Europe in the 1930s and then emerged from secrecy during the hippie period in California in the 1970s thanks to the master Yogi Bhajan.

This practice of Yoga is nevertheless very rare in the West because although effective, it can reveal delicate emotional states which can lead to psychological shocks. It is not recommended for fragile people, depressive or bipolar types. True Yogis in whom one has complete confidence must instruct the sessions.

Imbued with spirituality, this style of Yoga is also called Original Yoga because the classes take place with mantra chanting, sounds (chanting*), meditation and breathing.

The Kundalini claims the existence of the primordial energy present in each of us and evolving in a channel called "Sushumna" located in the spinal column which goes from the first chakra to 'at the highest chakra, the one at the top of the skull

Sometimes related to tantrism which uses sexuality to merge body and soul, feminine and masculine, to reach orgasm without the emission of fluids, so as not to losing sexual energy.

The truth would be to say that if one masters this energy, one can acquire a true awakening of self-awareness. It is a calm Yoga.

* Psalmody: vocal technique which consists in reciting a text on a single note, without voice inflection, of the monochord type.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

The postures are relatively secondary and complete the work on the psyche. Here the style favors the intellect more than the physical.

This practice focuses more specifically on particular points of the body. Asanas which are repetitive hygienic exercises called "Kriyas" require a good mastery of body and mind. This practice is extremely demanding and energizing physically and emotionally.

The style is focused on the inside, the goal being the connection between the different chakras. Multidimensional, this practice uses sound, breath and rhythm to circulate energy throughout the body.

It is also known to release buried emotions or energies from the past that are trapped in the body or wrapped around the spine; this is called the release of so-called kundalini energy.

Once released, one can aspire to more potential. The technique is so favorable that the effects can be almost immediate and visible.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

No special mats are needed here. Anyone can fit. A simple turban or even a "Mala" can be enough to help channel the energies.

Tapis de yoga Hot Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

BIKRAM YOGA OR HOT YOGA

INTENSIVE AND DYNAMIC YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

Worked from Hatha Yoga, this style developed by the master Bikram Choudhury born in Calcutta in India emerged in the 70s first in the United States in Hawaii and in California and since 2000 in France.

This type of yoga is practiced for 90 minutes in a room heated to 40°c with a humidity rate of 40%; it is for this reason that it is little practiced because it can cause cardiovascular problems.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

Each session is based on a series of 26 Hatha postures maintained for 2 minutes each and 2 breathing exercises, the first at the beginning, the second at the end of the session. The high temperature that this discipline imposes makes it possible to carry out deep stretching which optimizes good muscular endurance as well as good elimination of toxins and a reduction in stress.

With cardio increasing rapidly, this style, which is the business of sportsmen and expert Yogis Yoginis, aims to convey fresh and oxygenated blood to all the internal organs; detox guaranteed but don't forget to drink a lot Given its extreme nature and the significant efforts during the sessions, you have the feeling of having emptied yourself, you come out ultra relaxed.

The duration of the session is equivalent to approximately 20 minutes of running during which it is possible to lose up to 1 kg.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

Given the extreme nature of this discipline and its effects on perspiration, it is essential to use a completely non-slip Yoga mat; those made of natural hypoallergenic cork and those made of natural rubber are ideal.

Tapis de yoga Yin Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

YIN YOGA

SPIRITUAL AND GENTLE YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

Born in the 1970s, he was initiated by Paulie Zink, an expert in martial arts and Taoist Yoga, then later instructed by Suzann and Paul Grilley, Sarah Powers, Bernie Clark and Biff Mithoefer.

We speak of this style in Yin to designate the intuitive and immobility, unlike the other Yogas which are rather Yang ie dynamic.

This so-called silent style of meditation remains in a tradition of neutrality where all judgment is excluded. Invented about twenty years ago, this very gentle practice of Yoga on the floor lying at 45° on a support is intended to help you stay in a seated position for meditation. Muscle stimulation remains at a minimum. This dimension style more spiritual than all the others is a praise of slowness.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

The asanas are held for a long time (3 to 5 minutes) and facilitated by accessories for optimal relaxation (blocks, bricks, stretching straps, cushions, bolsters or other ). Ground releases are orderly on focus. The stretching of connective tissues is done in direct connection with a very intense emotional release.

Over 90 minutes, you only do 8 to 10 postures to optimize each one. Everything is done to develop inner calm, flexibility and reduce tension due to stress. Being a rather passive practice since sitting or lying down, it allows stretching of the fascias* and aims to restore their length and elasticity, especially at the level of the knees, pelvis and sacrum as well as at the level of the spine.

In this style of Yoga, you don't sweat, you sort of stop time and then start again better. In our ultra-connected society, this discipline is really taking off and that's good.

This style allows you to work in muscle relaxation on the meridians which, in traditional Chinese medicine, represent the various interconnected channels of the human body through which vital energy circulates, the famous Chi or Qi.

In Yin Yoga, we learn to refocus, to respect ourselves, to accept ourselves, to bring back our memories, in short, to find calm and to listen to it.. .

Physical activity being at its minimum, it is advisable to have rather warm clothes, yoga socks among others, but also a sleep mask to better get away from the world around us and get closer to our inner soul

* Fasciae represent fibromuscular membranes that cover anatomical structures.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

Rather "cocoon" rugs, soft, thick and warm, those made of TPE do the job very well.

Tapis de yoga Iyengar Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

IYENGAR YOGA or THERAPEUTIC YOGA

TRADITIONAL AND GENTLE YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

Named after its creator BKS alias Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar who, following an accident, developed this discipline in the 1970s to deepen different postures intended to heal certain areas of the body.

This traditional style has purely therapeutic aims closely linked to a lot of rigor and concentration. This style starts from Hatha Yoga and is based on the divine texts of Patanjali*.

* Texts on the general thought of the nature of the origins of the universe, of human life... We are talking about the "Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" which are texts written by the Sage Patanjali 200 years BC comprising 195 aphorisms which themselves are multiple deep thoughts summarized and concise to be easily memorized.

Yoga draws here all its power, its philosophy.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

With 90-minute sessions, this practice is accompanied by accessories (bricks, bolsters, straps, ropes or chair) to finalize very carefully organized sequences and perform postures in depth in perfect alignment. Some postures by influx of blood to the brain can really provide real well-being (for example the posture head down against a wall, held by straps).

It is a Yoga aimed at perfection and precision and rather intended for those who want to rise from an intermediate level. This style cultivates control, strength and stability for a real awareness of body and mind. Lending itself to a great deal of precision, this style can have therapeutic virtues for people recovering from certain injuries.

Little physically demanding, it is especially so mentally because it requires a lot of concentration.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

Absolutely non-slip mats made of natural cork or natural rubber are preferred here to perfect the asanas and allow advanced Yogis Yoginis to perfect their techniques.

Tapis de yoga Nidra Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

YOGA NIDRA or YOGA of SLEEP or YOGA of REGENERATION

SPIRITUAL AND GENTLE YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

Existing for thousands of years, it was developed in the 1940s-50s by Swami Satyananda Saraswati; it has its origins in Tantric Yoga.

This practice takes place over 30 to 40 minutes through breathing exercises and plunges us into semi-consciousness This is called deep relaxation.

According to legend, Brahma, the Hindu creator god, slept between each successive creation of the World.

Sophrology is inspired by this discipline.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

It is practiced lying down according to the posture of Savasana ie the one called posture of the corpse. With your eyes closed and still, you recite mantras that encourage you to let go. This unusual situation in the middle of the day aims to better manage your emotions, take time, evacuate hostile thoughts and reduce stress and anxiety.

By visualizing positive images on which we feel intimately good, we really learn to let go, something impossible in our modern society if the decision to stop time is not action. Nidra effectively treats insomnia and regulates healthy brain function.

The session must be organized on the formulation of an intention and a will, which is called "sankalpa" and which must be your jealously guarded secret at the sheltered from the judgment of others.

This sankalpa can also be repeated just before falling asleep or upon awakening when consciousness oscillates between sleep and wakefulness, which is called the hypnagogic state.

Yoga Nidra promotes a state of openness that can distance us from a certain rationality, from an overly analytical thought that can confine us to inert and sterile attitudes. This decision, this permission to think about..., can inspire us to take charge of our lives and responsibly adjust our destiny, the one we really want.

In fact, we do everything to get closer to yogic sleep without falling asleep. Without an external disturbing element, we learn indiscriminately to control our emotions.

This technique is often practiced at the end of a Hatha Yoga class to end the session gently and find yourself.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

A simply thick and comfortable mat is enough. All those presented on Yogaterrae are perfect, materials and colors to everyone's taste. A blindfold can be useful to more quickly let go, isolate yourself and think.

Tapis de yoga Power Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

POWER YOGA

SPORTY AND DYNAMIC FITNESS YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

Originally from California, founded by Beryl Birch Bendere in the 80s, this dynamic practice of Yoga which is part of a "fun" movement has its origins in Fitness, Ashtanga and Vinyasa. To make the sessions more dynamic, they take place to music, in a studio heated to over 30°C and focus on the proper synchronization of breathing with movement.

This discipline is called Strength Yoga because the sessions are often physical challenges since the postures are maintained over time.

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

The sessions always begin with the eternal "Sun Salutations" and the "Ujaï or Ujjayi" breath synchronized with the movements "Ujaï" which means in Sanskrit "the victorious breath" is a technique which regulates the duration of inspiration and expiration. It can be very beneficial because it increases gas exchange in the blood by deepening breathing and also reduces the cortisol produced by the adrenal glands which is a stress hormone.

Ujai also helps regulate the parasympathetic nervous system which is an essential component of the autonomic nervous system which is responsible for the automatic functions of the body.

In short, without going into too much detail, this technique can help slow heart rate and blood pressure with the aim of conserving energy.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

You can choose for this style of Yoga, a good compromise between thick enough for comfort but not too thick either to ensure good stability. The natural cork mats and natural expert rubber can perfectly match their function.

Tapis de yoga Green Yoga TPE liege naturel caoutchouc naturel antidérapant épais écologique YOGATERRAE marque française

GREEN YOGA

SPIRITUAL AND GENTLE YOGA

ORIGIN, TYPE AND MEANING

Created by Céline Miconnet, this new style of Yoga is a symbiosis of several types of Yoga and aims to reconnect with oneself but also and above all with Nature. Combining Iyengar, Vinyasa, Reiki, Bioenergy, Hypnosis and Meditation, Green Yoga allows you to feel the energies.

Living very often in a world that demands a lot of energy, Green Yoga allows us to rediscover a sense of unity between humans, animals and plants. .

PRINCIPLES AND BENEFITS

In principle, the sessions revolve around daily spiritual practices called "Saadhana" and recommend "touching" the different elements of Nature such as the ground, rocks, trees and flowers.

Some classes can take place blindfolded to optimize the 5 senses and only on postures in the name of animals to better connect with Nature, some others focused this time on the sun, the moon and the light for more Earth, Body and Spirit connection.

This is called "Green Sadhana". This style is now referred to as self-help therapy.

RECOMMENDED MAT TYPES

No real obligation to roll out a carpet if you want to "touch" Nature, for example if you perform postures on a rock or other. However, if the preference is to protect yourself from the ground and still stay in contact with an ideally natural material, that made of natural cork can be quite suitable.

SOUND MIND, SOUND LIFE,
